Biography
I've always wondered what an All Music biography about me would read like: As the singer/guitarist/songwriter of Apparently Nothing, Aaron Shekey has penned scores of songs that can often be described as post-post-grunge. Relying on us-against-them lyrical observations, Shekey and his band have infused swaggering blues leads with what's leftover of the post-grunge rock landscape.
As one of the most prolific artists to emerge from the Madison, WI underage scene, Shekey is, for all practical purposes, Madison's answer to an era obsessed with junk culture. Drawing upon a kaleidoscope of influences -- classic rock, pop, folk, country, blues, blue collar singer/songwriter -- Shekey has created a body of work that is, while atypical of the times, entirely relevant. Shekey appropriates (read steals) freely from whatever genres he feels like, often juxtaposing sounds that may never have co-existed organically, creating music that is, above all, honest and heedless to current trends -- meaningful despite the culture that surrounds it.
As for a solo career, shekey often creates music that does not fit within the rigid, albeit self imposed genre limitations of his band Apparently Nothing. rather than record and release an album under the rock outfit's moniker, Shekey has enlisted long-time friends and fellow madison musicians to create a fresh, often whimsical departure from Apparently Nothing's usual fare.
His debut solo album, "Minneapolis, etc." is scheduled for release in the spring of 2039. Meanwhile, his band Apparently Nothing is touring amidst the success of their latest EP, "Apparently Nothing & The Usual Things". Biography by David Gills
